Cincinnati looks to revitalize South Fairmount
–
Decades ago, South Fairmount had a thriving commercial district where people could walk from their homes on the hills to the butcher, the baker or the candle maker.
That is the community’s vision once again now that the greenway, a long strip of parkland with a once-buried stream that has been brought to the surface, is a reality.
The Cincinnati Planning Commission voted Friday to rezone 460 properties with 163 property owners affected. Community members hope it will lead to new investment in businesses, restaurants, retail and housing.
-Land at the eastern end of Westwood and Harrison Avenues where the Western Hills Viaduct terminates will be changed from manufacturing general to urban mix. That allows single-family homes, multi-family homes, offices, hospitals, hotels, day cares, restaurants, bars, businesses services and other commercial uses. Drive-throughs are barred and vehicle services, storage services and other industrial uses are restricted.
-Several parcels on the north side of Queen City Avenue from Harrison to White Street will be rezoned from commercial community/mixed and auto to commercial community/pedestrian. The change allows a traditional urban character, with buildings constructed to the street line.
-Parcels on the south side of Westwood Avenue and west of Quebec Road will be changed from commercial community/auto to commercial community/mixed. That change allows a mix of pedestrian and auto-oriented developments. Older, pedestrian-oriented buildings can be mixed with newer, car-related uses. Car washes and gas stations are allowed.
