GE Aerospace partner Safran to invest $65 million in NKY aerospace manufacturing site

Safran Landing Systems Kentucky, the world’s leading supplier of landing equipment to Boeing, will invest more than $65 million and bring 92 additional jobs paying an average hourly wage of more than $44 to its Walton, Ky., manufacturing facility.
The company currently employs 340 out of the Walton facility. The added employees will bring the total over 430. Most of them will be brought on next year.
Safran, headquartered in Paris, France, will also take the unusual step of moving a full technical team to the facility to perform simulation and design work. Those teams had previously been based entirely in Paris, according to Philippe Garnier, CEO and general manager of the wheels and brakes division in Safran Landing Systems Kentucky. Garnier told the Business Courier the design office will grow to 10 members by the end of 2024.
“The whole aerospace industry is undergoing a huge restart,” he said.
The Walton facility’s customers include UPS, FedEx, United Airlines, Allegiant, Aeromexico, Spirit Airlines and Air Canada. It supports Boeing’s 737, 777 and 787; the Airbus A320 family; and C-17 and KC-135 military aircraft.
The company has had significant success hiring through internship programs in partnership with Ignite Institute, Gateway Community & Technical College and the University of Cincinnati. Garnier said Safran hires many of the 5-10 UC co-op students that matriculate every season.
“The majority of the engineers here are UC grads,” he said.
