UC approves $15M demo package for $95M campus renovation project

UC plans to renovate about 63,000 square feet and add a 144,000-square-foot addition to the eight-story, 106-year-old chemistry building located at 2855 Campus Way in the heart of Uptown, in order to update and optimize the space.

The project includes the removal of a 1930s-era addition to the Old Chemistry building, while maintaining the original 1917 portion facing Herman Schneider Quadrangle.

An addition will include flexible modular lab spaces for UC’s chemistry and biology programs. The building will include between 140,000 and 160,000 gross square feet of “future forward” academic and research space.

The addition and renovation will include all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; new life safety systems, including fire alarm and sprinkler systems; and Americans with Disabilities Act- and related code-complaint upgrades.

Skanska USA was selected in June as the project’s construction manager.

Overall, the construction is estimated to cost $66.5 million, while the total project cost is around $95 million.

UC expects to wrap the renovation by July 2025.
